How I created a new onboarding experience with the initial business goal to upsell add on products, but ended up proving a change in direction was needed.

While at Toyota I was responsible for the Onboaridng expereince, from sign up through to App dashboard working with the Global PO and NA Product Owners.

I joined the team with a set of designs already in place but these failed to address the big issues facing app users as well as not functioning the way the trials actually worked (some you couldn't opt out of, despite what the initial screens suggested).

During my time on this project i worked to unpick the complexity of onboarding for various different generation and trim level vehicles as well as trying to solve osme of the UX Problems/Opportunities left on the table with the original designs.

What we learned

The original concept was iterated on to improve users understanding of the Trials and service offered (because Trials = $), and while we did improve Users understanding it was still clear it was too complex and education was not happening at the right time so an initiative was kicked off to reimagine the whole App with Onboarding being a key area.
